Glimmering, glittering, gleaming, and glinting! Is there anything quite like the shimmer of gold?? Of course not, and this wonderful Victorian set of hat pins and the matching hair/veil pins will be there whenever you get the hankering to see the shining substance!
In its original (!) box, which is satin lined, and has the imprint C.D. Peacock, Chicago, this set has two hat pins and two matching hair or veil pins. Each hat pin has a 6 in shank and a round head, which is 1/4 in diameter. Each pin shank is marked "filled pin" . This indicates that yellow gold (in this instance) is bonded to silver or another metal. This is a solid layer of gold, which must constitue at least 5% of the total weight (by law). Each head features a swirling and raised design of tiny beading. Each of the heads looks as though it was gilded, but has darkened with time.
The hair/veil pins are 2 and 1/2 in long and 1/4 in wide. The top is designed as an almost complete flattened oval. The back of each top is marked 14k gold. The front of each top is simply incised. All in all, it is unusual to find a complete set such as this, from the Victorian era, originally boxed, in fabulous condition.
This set is from my personal collection, which I have formed over three plus decades. I have belonged to the American Hat Pin Society for decades, to continue to learn and associate with my fellow collectors. It is simply time for some of my treasures to grace new homes.
