Italian images are often romantic and the design of this compact exemplifies that genre. This gorgeous compact is 3 in wide and 2 and 1/2 in long. With a back straight hinge, the rest of the piece features scalloped edging and luscious enamel embellishments.
All of the surface of the silver is embossed, with the reverse of the piece showing a swirling, curling motif, with what resembles a cornucopia in the center, spouting two flowers. The rim on the back mimics chain stitching. The sides, which are 1/2 in deep, are very simply scored.
The top of the compact has an enameled panel, which portrays two brunette ladies, dressed in 18th century style. They are in a very bucolic setting, with a troubadour serenading them, as he plays a string instrument. He is quite dashing in his clothing, wearing knee britches and silk stockings.. The entire scene is fired onto the compact, giving the top a glossy finish. The whole scene is wreathed in alternating spring green and lapis hued splashes of enamel. The border is also scored.
The interior of the compact is gilded so as to look like "gold". The original mirror is beveled and flawless. The interior bottom has the 800 silver mark, indicating European silver. It has a secure snap closure. This early 20th century gem is in wonderful vintage condition, only awaiting the right lady to slip it into her purse!
