Was this a small coin catcher or meant for a petite young lady to have as her first "real" purse? Either way, this bagetelle, coming from the 1920's, is the perfect accessory for any age lady! While not marked, the frame, which is 2 and 1/2 in long and 1/4 in wide, is probably silver plate. It is shaped in a typical arch, with a scrolling pattern of decoration.
The mesh body of the purse is 3 and 1/4 in long, and 2 and 1/8 in wide. It is attached in the usual way to the frame, via, in this case, very small metal rings. The mesh "blocks" are colored in salmon pink, a pea green, and soft cream. The edge of the bottom has four scallops.
The handle is constructed of a set of elongated, open links. It opens with a ball top latch. The interior sports a tiny metal tag, which is engraved with the Whiting and Davis marking. There is, on either side of the frame, a small oval, which was probably intended to be engraved with a monogram. For being nearly a century old, this piece is in excellent condition, with the mesh completely intact. Can be cleaned upon purchase at the buyer wish!
This is the perfect gift for that most feminine of ladies that you know!
