Antique clockwork Saint Nicholas sitting in a red wooden chair. His eyes move and he rocks when wound and level. He was a store display often described as a ‘Trade Stimulator’! Circa late 19th century. He is 25" tall. He is in good condition for his age. There are chips and scratches on his body, his clothes are stained, and his shoes are coming apart.
More information on this antique Santa!
The head is papier-mache, likely over a cardboard form. The hands are composition and the
clothing is original. The head has glass paperweight doll eyes
that move up and down like a sleep eyed doll so that they move
appropriately when his head bobs. The clock works winds well but
we don't overwind it either. Santa is screwed to his chair
at the back which is probably original as well.
Like a clock the figure and chair must be leveled to operate which means you would
need a clock repairman to level it for you and then not move it
from place to place - especially after shipping! The works
operates correctly but might need to be checked as well after shipping.
