Presenting a early Victorian Lava cameo of Medusa intricately carved in high relief circa 1840 - 1860.
This X-Large cameo of Medusa, is carved in very high relief and detail. The tendrils of her hair and the snakes which wrap around her are intricately carved. From the wings on her head to the snakes which wrap around her head forming a bow around her neck, this piece pleases. Medusa is represented sensually with hooded eyes and parted lips.
The cameo is bezel set in 12K Gold in a foliate motif of snake - like vines, leaves and flowers. The flowers and leaves are decorated with gold granulation with a rich patina and the vines are highly polished hollow gold tubes engraved in the same motif. The brooch measures 2.125" x 2" x .75" and the cameo measures 1.675 " x 1.375" x .5". The brooch closes securely with its’ pin and c-clasp and weighs 27 grams.
This beautiful piece is in excellent antique condition with no breaks or repairs. It has visibly tool marks and solder on the back of the frame. There is a fly speck on the inside corner of her eye lid and is only visible under high magnification. There are no legible hallmarks. JSP testing solution was used to verify the precious metal content. Multiple areas were tested and all resulted in a range greater than 10K and less than 14K Gold and is guaranteed as such. The style of the brooch with its’ original tube and c - clasp dates this piece to circa 1840 -1860s.
