Presented here is a 1 ½" x 3/4" antique pinchbeck Art Nouveau sash pin/brooch circa 1900. This brooch features a central serrated bezel set ruby-paste baguette. The brooch has sensual lines, whiplash curves and a raised repousse design.
The brooch features the original pin which is straight with a c-clasp closure. This brooch is in excellent antique condition with no visible dings, dents or scratching. There were no visible hallmarks. JSP testing acid was used and it was mildly positive for 10K. I believe that 9k gold was used in this alloy. A presidium gem tester was used to test the ruby-colored center stone.
Pinchbeck is a alloy of copper, zinc and, in the late 1800's 9k gold was added. The pinchbeck jewelry showed fine workmanship, and was used as "traveling jewelry" by well-to-do people.
The Art Nouveau movement was from 1885 to 1910. It focused on sensual lines and images of the female figure and forms in nature. The whiplash curves and exaggerated lines created a feeling of lushness and opulence.
