After the turn of the 19th century into the 20th, women's fashions changed dramatically. Women decided to no longer be constrained to corsets and clothing that covered everything, to the loosely worn, and low bodice dresses of the 1920's. All those exposed necklines and backs needed adornment. Hence the lariat.
