This rounded antique chest is typical from the wood polychrome tradition in the Rhine Land area and especially Alsace. This authentic red, white and green pattern made of geometric forms and stylized flowers originally comes from the village of Gottesheim. It was very trendy during the middle 19th century ! The mackerel background decoration of the chest is made of carved potatoes circular patterns made will walnut stain.
The dovetailed chest itself dates from circa 1860 but the polychromy has been fully restored during the XXth century. The corners have been strengthened with metal a long time ago such as the handles and hinges that were integrated during a restoration. You can lock the chest with a metal hook. The lock remains but there is no key. Great vintage condition !
