This antique mold is a typical example or the variety of culinary and especially cake potteries that existed in Alsace. It has this traditional orange glazed aspect quite typical of the pieces that used to be produced in the village of Soufflenheim in the north Alsace area.
The crawfish, a delicious crustacean you used to find in the rivers (they were not polluted in those times...), was a symbol of prosperity. Other symbolic form molds exist such as fish, lily, eagle, lamb, heart...
The crawfish molds are pretty rare and this one is in particular great condition. It has its three original feet. The bottom is black but this is normal on that kind of item that was put into the oven.
