Here is a genuine Alsatian bridal or possibly child room chest with the original polychrome painted decoration. Its medium size format between the traditional big bridal trunk and the little treasure box makes it a very original piece. I think it dates from the end of the XVIIIth century. It comes from Alsace and is typical from the German handpainted piece of furniture tradition.
Most of the peasants could not afford sophisticated walnut piece of furniture and polychromy was a cheap way to make a common wood looks brighter. As usual on that type of furniture it is made of fir tree dovetail construction using a single wide plank per side.
The polychrome composition is enhanced by wood moldings in red color. The chest still has its original four feet and its lock that opens with a key. The bottom part is gathered with the original wrought iron hinges. Inside the chest there is a small compartment that remains. It was often dedicated to the sewing kit.
I must say that it is hard to find old handpainted chests in such a great condition. Some woodworms and chips at the feet but the whole condition remains excellent considering the age of the piece.
