This item is a lock or access door to an Alsatian big wine cask in oak wood. This little door was placed from the inside of the barrel and was supposed to provide an opening for emptying and cleaning the wine barrels. There is also a hole in the little door in order to put a spout (to taste the wine). Known in French as a "Verrou de Fût" or "Bouchon de Fût". The bolt on this type of object was sometimes also decorative, especially in Alsace. The bolt is carved with a gouge and dated with the year 1834. It is movable thanks to a copper axle that has a nice green patina. The condition of this item is good but I did not want to wash it. It comes directly from a cellar and you can still feel some humidity on the wood which is full of dust ! I find it charming.
