This pewter jug with a hinged lid is representative of a strong Rhineland tradition. The one you can purchase here comes from Alsace (obviously near the Colmar area). It is pretty nice and rare because it is decorated with beautiful patterns and the name of the owner (G-L Wittmann) is also engraved, such as the date of 1829. It was probably a marriage present. The spout has a heart shape. There is a touch-mark (a flower) on the handle but I was not able to identify the maker. This kind of pitcher was usually made to serve wine.
Condition commensurate with age and use - various superficial marks & scratches and dings & dents but the general aspect is still pretty good and the engraved inscriptions in excellent condition, such as the lid.
