Here is a very little but genuine piece of folk art from central France (Auvergne area I think). It was supposed to be used by women and dressmakers to put the lace around. This kind of item was usually a present from a husband to his wife, sometimes for the marriage. It is typical from the winter works peasants liked to do to pass the time.
The wood is probably chestnut and has been engraved with a simple knife. The central pattern is made of a six branches star surrounded by a circular pattern. It obviously represents the sun. The initials of the couple are written on each side ("J" and "C"). There are also a cross and a heart, symbols of religion and union. Very simple but also quite moving.
The condition of the item is great. I would say it dates from the middle of the 19th century but it could be a little bit older.
