Sophisticated double folio architectural design lithographs of antique 18th century French draped bed and elaborate chimney decoration, combine intricate detail with bold graphic shapes all in a wonderful rich warm red. Oversized, to make an elegant statement in a variety of decors, from modern to traditional.
These are high quality chromolithographs with great detail, richness and depth of color, removed from a 19th century French design folio book "Histoire de l'Art Decoratif", which details actual historical furnishings illustrated at 1/9th of the original size.
It is tempting to speculate on the identity of the original owner of these furnishings. The decorations are of the very highest quality and affordable to few; the bed resembles that in Louis XIV's ceremonial bedroom. Speculation aside, these stand alone as sophisticated decorative elements.
The "Lit de Parade" or, draped bed, clearly features cartouches with the initial "E" over linked "C"s, but also has "MA" with a dangling heart and "D M R (?)" with a Christian cross subtly worked into the elaborate designs. Motifs of dragons, swans, as well as geometric and foliate forms add to the visual interest.
The "Chiminee de Parade" features two different pairs of coats of arms, portraits of saints, crowned heraldry lions, and elaborate scrolling foliate forms terminating in stylized animal heads. There are also crossed swords and a quiver of arrows. This combines to make a statement of power, wealth and refinement that would not be lost on viewers. This decoration does not overwhelm, but only enriches the neoclassical form of the niche above the chimney.
In excellent condition, with the original stitching from the binding visible with close examination to add that extra touch of age and authenticity. Double-sized folio prints with images measuring a generous 21" by 14". The chromolithographs are double mated and framed under glass for a total framed size of 24" by 31" each. Photos were taken with glass removed to minimize glare.
