Charming and loaded with character - these dog shaped wrought iron candle holders have everything we look for in good American folk art pieces: original and whimsically rustic, but with a certain unmistakable earnest authenticity shining through. The pair have a mellow aged finish and pack an immediate graphic appeal.
Hand fashioned of wrought iron, with hand-made rivets. The tails and handle/heads are rolled on a forge and deliberately hollow to provide a cooler grip. There are minute chippy striations on the edges of the body, possibly from hand applied pinprick holes used to aid in cutting separation. Lovely aged patina, but solid and well balanced on all four "paws" ( the painted dower chest lid is quite uneven)
Good substantial size for striking display on a sideboard or mantle with each measuring 18"L x 8"H x 4"W. American, 19th or early 20th century
