Highly decorative and substantial fine vintage Venetian silver and cobalt blue enamel Florentine compact, circa 1930s. The Venetian silver case features an elaborately chased leaf and floral design on the back, continuing decoration on the sides and scrolling motifs on the front. Embedded within this is enamel in a rich cobalt blue and a neoclassical scene, also in enamel, featuring cherubs or putti frolicking around a tree.
The decorations on these compacts are usually drawn from recognized classical paintings or prints, allowing collectors to amass and display their own miniature "galleries". This piece is no exception, featuring a work of famed Italian painter Francesco Albani (1578 -1660). The last picture included here is of the Albani painting that inspired the compact.
Excellent vintage condition, with a firm close and complete with the original powder sifter.
