Presenting a rare and dramatic antique Black Forest staff featuring the carved walnut bust of a uniformed 18th century Prussian soldier.
This unusually large piece stands at five foot six inches tall, with the carved bust measuring ten by nine inches wide. Its unusually large size, and eye catching subject, combined with wonderfully aged patina and execution make this piece quite unique and dramatic.
The bust has at some point been remounted on an antique Swiss alpenstock, which itself is topped with a carved and hide mountain goat's foot. The stick is surmounted with a large 10 inch high carved and painted figural head, bearing the commanding visage of an 18th century Prussian soldier. He wears pleated collar and a powdered wig topped with a bicorne hat , all of which has been masterfully carved. The nicely aged paint, including the gold trim edging the hat, and the white wig and collar, gives further depth and textural interest. The age and patina on both the painted surfaces and the walnut are superb.
The bust has been remounted at some point in its past on an antique Swiss alpenstock stick, The stick has a hand carved mountain goat's hoof below a hock wrapped in hair-on goat hide. Below that, on the stick, is marked "Luzern", with the older German spelling.
A noteworthy addition to a cane or militaria collection. It is also one of those striking and unique character pieces savored by decorators to help personalize and define a space. The staff would add drama and interest leaning against a wall in a gentleman's library or in a period room, and is sure to elicit comments
