An exceptionally handsome antique inlaid wooden glove or fan box. These boxes were used by gentlemen to store their evening gloves and by ladies to store their gloves and fans – both expensive and usually custom-made accessories. This Box embellished with a line brass insert edging along the top, a silver metal cartouche in the center and silver metal beads, beads are set into brass frame, along the edge. The cartouche has inscription "Julie Braunagel 1864'. Box has brass hinges which are original and work well allowing the box to close snugly. The lock looks fine but key is missing and it is hard to tell whether it is in working condition. The box is in overall excellent condition. The varnish is still glossy with minor traces of use, visible only when tilted to the light. The brass hardware is securely attached. The interior of the box lined in butter/yellowish velvet. The Box stands 3 1/4" - 8.3cm high; 11" x 4" - 28 x 10 cm.
