Antique French Palais Royal Box cranberry glass in gilt ormolu mounts
The brilliant cranberry glass combined with delicate brass dore reticulated ormolu give this small lidded bowl a jewel-like presence. It dates from the end of the Napoleon period, towards 1870 and comes from Paris. Small vanity bowls such as this graced handsome dressing tables and would have held powders or cremes. Now a days one of the use option is a salt cellar, it adds the ambiance to dinner table, but I can see it as ring holder as well as candy / troche dish. The bowl has an elegant body, made of fine hand blown cranberry glass. The bottom as well as lid are set into reticulated ormolu in flowers and intertwined arabesques design. There is a lower gallery base with four boule feet.
The box stands about 3" (7.8 cm) high to the top of the finial, it is 2 3/4" (6.8 cm) in diameter at the opening.
It survives in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The delicate metalwork is in fine condition, the gilding shows almost no wear. It is a handsome antique piece.
