This is an antique French opaline glass box. An excellent example of French Art Opaline glass box. Made in a cube shape it is embellished with lovely enamel hand painted flowers and bird, the enamels remain as charming as when first accomplished. The glass set into bronze dore mounts and marked with hand written numbers, which typical for French glass items of that period.
The box is in very good to excellent condition, considering the age, with no chips or cracks. The 'S' shaped clasp and hinge are securely tight and work properly.
The box measures 3 x 3 x 3 inches; 7.7 x 7.7 x 7.7 cm. Beautiful decorative piece which will look great on display and enhance any decor, useful too.
Opaline glass is a decorative style of glass first appeared in France during the Empire period. It became very popular due to its soft delicate and very decorative look. Many different pieces were produced in opaline glass, including vases, decanters, perfume bottles, boxes, clocks and other implements and were sold from souvenirs shops of Palais Royale to a World Travelers.
