A delightful piece of history, an antique French opaline crystal glass trinket box or casket. Dated to mid 19th century. Hand blown, it is embellished with enamel hand painted ornamental design and enhanced with glass and enamel beads. The Box set into bronze mounts, has nice secure hinge, strong enough to hold quite heavy lid, hinge works properly.
The Box is in excellent condition with no damage. It shows expected age related wear, otherwise perfect. Original lock, but key went missing.
The box stands 3 1/4" high, 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" oval.
Mid.19th century a time when opaline glass reached its pick of popularity. Originally opaline glass or cristal d'opale first appeared in France during the Empire period of Napoleon I. This opaque or slightly translucent glass was produced in either white or brightly colored in shades of green, blue, pink, black, yellow and lilac. The attractive glass items on its own often were decorated with gilding, some with hand painted ornamental designs, flowers or birds. This species in here is a fabulous example of French Opaline glass of mentioned period.
