The well-known studio artist Celia Sebiri created this arresting panda bear pendant in sterling silver (as marked) on dark brown hardwood in the 1970s. Her handmade work for such high-fashion outlets as Neiman Marcus and Saks drew strongly from the natural world, and she had a love of animals, both exemplified in this piece. She won the Coty Award for jewelry design in 1973 and passed away in 2006 at the age of 93.
The piece measures 3 1/8" x 2 5/16" x about 7 mm. deep. The sterling silver portion is in good condition, with patina. There are two dents at the lower edge and one to the right of the mouth, but all are tiny. The black silk cord on which it hangs measures about 30" long and has minor frays. Overall it is in very good condition.
A signed piece in a spirit of good humor by a collectible designer.
