A pear-shaped amethyst weighing 43.10 carats, set off by small rubies above it on either side, beautifully presented in a custom-made 14-karat (as stamped) yellow gold necklace. The amethyst is mounted by prongs near the point and wrapped on the sides by a flowing stylized part bezel that flares outward, dipping out of sight at the open heel of the stone. The domed "Cleopatra" style chain measures 6 mm. wide. Stamped 'ITALY" on the back of the hidden box clasp, with swing-around figure-eight safety catch, it is split and joined to the outward-sweeping center decoration on each side at the roll of channel-set rubies. The fourteen rubies have vivid red color and weigh about 0.35 carat total. The total item weighs 70.8 grams (45.7 pennyweights).
The amethyst was bought in 1993 from famed Brazilian retail jeweler Amsterdam Sauer, as attested by accompanying sales receipt, and the necklace was likely created soon thereafter, judging from the style. The amethyst has dark, moderately strong, moderate bluish purple color, and very good "life," or brilliance, due to the modified brilliant cut faceting and a small table that throws light and color into the fairly steep crown angle, making it a show-stopper.
Small signs of wear are present: some scratches along the neck chain and one broken ruby at the bottom of one side, These are minor and do not detract from the overall fine design and workmanship of this piece.
