Victorian woolwork pictures often utilized the popular subject matters of the era. Children and dogs were among the most popular at the time. In this wonderful example of counted cross stitch embroidery, the stitcher used a child in full costume sleeping against his large pet dog. The figures were placed in the garden of their home, visible in the background. She also placed a small pond with flora in the way of flowers and shrubs surrounding them. The child is holding a hoop, a common toy in the 19th century.

The stitches were well executed and done in even rows. There is much detail to the costume, including blue plaid socks and Victorian children’s shoes. There is a white collar showing around the red flowing shirt. The sleeping child and dog together lend a romantic element to the idyllic landscape of the garden and grounds of this picture.

It is housed in its original simple oak frame that perfectly sets off the picture. It has achieved a dark, rich brown color and a lovely patina.

The condition is excellent, especially for its age. There is no insect damage or staining. The color retention is just short of phenomenal, given its age of a century-and-a-half. The frame is in excellent condition as well.

It measures 21 inches wide by 18-½ inches high, including the frame.
