This mid-20 century silver plate covered dish with its wrought iron stand and warmer was the height of elegance at dinner parties. The use and style of this piece reflects the type of entertaining that the English did from the 18th through the 20th centuries. It was, however, made by the Sheridan Silver Company of Taunton, Massachusetts.
There is a great amount of detail to the entire piece. The lid has a large and decorative handle that resembles two flower stems joined at the top. Around the rim of the bottom of the dish a decorative border was added to give the two pieces additional interest. There is a piece of wrought iron that was used to attach the chaffing dish to the long, turned handle. This piece of wrought iron was decorated with flowers and scrolls.
The comfortable polished wooden handle was turned not only to comfort one’s hand, but as a decorative part of the whole. The warming stand was done in both silver plate and wrought iron. The long feet were curved to add elegance and grace. All of the wrought iron was further embellished with scrolls and flowers. The legs were attached to the plate with solid brass rivets. The apparatus that provides the adjustable flame fits snugly in the wrought iron raised bottom. The manufacturer’s mark for Sheridan Silver was engraved on the bottom and the letters E.P.B., for electroplated (silver) brass. There also are additional impressed marks on the bottom of wrought iron stand.
The condition of this piece is excellent for its age and use. There are only a few minor scruff marks and one teeny scratch on the lid. There are a few scuff marks on the bottom of the chaffing dish. All its parts fit well together.
This is a quality piece of vintage silver plate that appears to hardly have been used. It certainly was well cared for.
The chaffing dish, without the handle measures 12-¾ inches in diameter. The handle extends 8-½ inches. The total height is about 13-½ inches.
