As candles were important parts of the Victorian home, it is no wonder that special care was taken to design all kinds of candlesticks. This fabulous pair was each turned from a single piece of solid oak. This form is often described as an open barley twist.
These tall and handsome late 19th century oak candlesticks are complete with urn-shaped, hand-cast brass and bronzed cups that were placed on top of the candlesticks to give them an even more decorative appeal. Over the last century, these candlesticks have taken on an exceptionally rich, dark color and a pleasing, glowing patina. They also have their old felt bottoms so that fine polished furniture would not scuff when they were moved about.
The turned tops that hold candles have a pleasing shape that add to the overall design of the sticks. The sticks also have wide, hand-turned bases, making them less likely to tip.
They are in superb condition, having been very well cared for over the last 140 or so years. I have had them professionally polished.
Their height of 12-1/2 inches make them taller than most of this type. The hand-turned bases measure 6 inches in diameter.
