Classical Italianate scenes were in vogue during the time this piece was made. They were painted on canvas and paper, as well as papier mache. The papier mache factories in the English Midlands had many outstanding artists painting everything from tables to chairs to boxes and baskets.
In this exquisite piece, the beautiful, romantic painting itself is in a timeless, old world style with its dramatic trees and Romanesque edifices. The buildings are set along a picturesque lake with a figure in a doorway. There are also colorful figures near the shoreline. Mountains loom in the background, adding perspective to a scene that measures only about 6-1/2 inches across.
The scalloped basket edge was heavily gilded in 14-carat gold leaf with fanciful feathers and intricate curves and green enameled motifs. The brass handle has designs of grapes and leaves winding on it as the stems of the vine become the mainstay of the handle. The handle can either be laid down or can swing up.
This stunning and elegant piece of papier mache is in superb condition, especially for its age. The painting itself has only very minor crazing and a small surface scratch. The color retention is remarkable, as is the lack of pitting and the deep crazing that is common on Victorian papier mache. The gold leafing is still dazzling, and its luminous quality is present throughout.
This is a quality piece of Victorian papier mache, and as such, deserves a special place in anyone’s collection.
It measures 10-1/2 inches in diameter.
