In this delightful very small painting on porcelain, the artist took his cue and inspiration from Antonin Boullemier, considered one of the Minton factory’s best painters in the last quarter of the 19th century. The French-born painter was recruited to work on some of Minton’s finest commissions, including pieces for Royalty. He specialized in portraits, cupids and mythological subjects.
The young lady in this idyllic scene is reading a letter and her reaction is one of delight as she reads accompanied by her be-ribboned pet bird. At the girl’s feet is a basket of pink and white roses, and there are more flowers around her growing in the garden.
She is seated next to a stone wall that features a large plaque depicting a cherub. Her wide-brimmed hat has been cast aside. She is dressed in a wonderful costume of blue and pink fabrics and a white blouse. Her blond hair is pulled back with a pink ribbon. This is certainly the height of French romanticism. It is painted in fine detail with a thick glazed over it.
The plaque is not signed, but there is an old collector’s label on the back that refers to Boullimier.
It was housed in a somewhat later wood and gilded frame in order to hang it with the hook at the top.
In all, this is a precious miniature-type of French painting that deserves a special place in your decorating scheme.
The porcelain plaque is in excellent condition with only minor surface abrasions. The frame has some minor losses to the gilding, mainly to the corners, but overall, it is in excellent condition for its age and type.
It measures 3-3/8 inches wide by 3 inches high, including the frame.
