In these fine examples of carved wooden bookends, the depth of carving and unusual and bountiful assortment of fruit makes for very decorative and interesting objects. The hand gilding is all original. There was great attention to detail to make these urns of fruit appear in proportion and realistic.
Age has darkened considerably the spaces between the pieces of fruit; however, this natural aging adds greatly to its decorative appeal and antique ambience. Although these pieces were made around the 1930s or 1940s, they have the appearance of much older objects. They would make an excellent presentation doing their job on a shelf or table with some fine books.
The condition of both bookends is excellent for their age and type. They have acquired a beautiful patina and pleasing color. The hand-painted surfaces have a few old, minor blemishes in the paint. They have been weighted with metal in some fashion and are heavy for their size, as they should be for their purpose.
They each measure about 9-1/4 inches high and 5-3/4 inches wide.
