This large and impressive porcelain figural candle holder may have been inspired by the expression, “carrying a torch for someone.” Although it is only picked out in turquoise, pink and gold, it still has a formidable presence.
The cherub is hold a torch-shaped candle holder that is ribbed all around with an overlay of turquoise leaves joined by golden twigs. The gilt on this piece is gold leafed and therefore has a beautiful, soft glow to it. The turquoise is enameled and has a pretty glow to it. A pink bow is wrapped around the cherub’s upper leg and cascades down in the back.
The flared base is painted in flowers with leaves jutting out between the many blooms. There are six bands of gold leaf that surround the base. The hollow porcelain has been filled in for added sturdiness.
Although the cherub has its wings, hands and feet intact, it has sustained some old age cracks that appear along its side and also on the bottom of its leg near the foot. As they are very old, they do not detract all that much from this impressive piece. There also is a small bit of porcelain in the rim of the candle holder that is missing, as well as a small piece of the turquoise elephant ear leaf on top.
It measures 14-1/4 inches high and the diameter of the base is 6-3/4 inches.
