This exquisitely embroidered silkwork has a fine classical feel to it. The young lady, seated beneath a tree, is resting with her pet on a long ribbon. Her costume was elaborately embroidered in short and long stitch with shading and outlining defining the fabric.
The tree trunk was embroidered in long and short stitch, as were the branches; however, the leaves are the true works of needlework art. They are done in small French knots, one laid against the other in combinations that create beautiful displays of leaves. The colors of teal blue, browns, and gold harmonize wonderfully with those in the girl’s costume and the landscape.
The dog was embroidered in long and short stitches, and made to look as if he has spots. The flowers were embroidered on top of the blue and brown ground upon which the dog is lying. This technique allows for a third-dimensional effect.
The girl’s hands and face and the background were painted for greater detail as was the custom of the time.
This incredible piece of early embroidery is housed in its original molded wood and gesso frame with an eglomise mount. The mount was embellished with a wide strip of gold leaf around the oval and a leafy motif in each corner. The deeply molded frame has a lovely beaded border. I put a new wire on the back and a new piece of brown paper so that dirt and dust do not get onto the silkwork.
Unfortunately, as in many early silkworks, the background silk has split. But fortunately, none of the embroidery was damaged by this split, and it is in excellent condition. The wonderful original frame with its hand painted eglomise glass is in good condition overall. It has a few places where the gesso has been lost and the gilding is crazed, but with a frame of this advanced age these issues can be expected.
This is a very charming and decorative piece of early needlework to add to your needlework collection.
It measures 12-3/4 inches wide and 15-3/4 inches high, including the frame.
