The front of this beautiful large sized buttery gold gilded antique locket, from the late 1800s or early 20th century, bears the entwined & decorated letters A, E & I, representing the Victorian sentiment - 'Amity Eternity & Infinity'. AEI jewellery was often a gift between friends, family members as well as romantic couples.
The rear of the locket is plain. Internally it is in good order, but missing original glass covers and slip frames. Perspex over photos usually suffices for replacement photos.
Marks: The locket is not marked. My jeweller confirms it is gilded on a base metal, probably brass. Dimensions: The locket is almost ~2 & 1/4 inch (5.5cm) long, including the large original decorative bail. The locket is 1 1/4 inches (3.2cm) wide. Total weight is 21.1 grams. Condition: The condition is very good, especially given its age. There are no dents or holes to the front or back. There is just the faintest wear to the gilding on the reverse of the locket, and the top of the bail. There are tiny light scratches overall, but they are really only age patina. There is some patina between the lettering that could be cleaned off if desired. Internally, it is in good order - but no slip covers or original glass covers present. The hinge is in good order - the locket closes very well, clicks shut, and stays shut.
Overall, an attractive sentimental large Victorian AEI locket in good condition. Getting hard to find!
