TLM Charm CASTLETON (UK) Thomas L. Mott Vintage Enamel English Sterling Silver for Charm Bracelet - Home of Blue John
This is a hard to find Thomas L Mott bracelet charm of the map of the town of Castleton, in the English countryside - the county of Derbyshire. I have long been a collector of Blue John jewellery, most of which would have originated in Castleton. I have also been there to visit!
Blue John (also known as Derbyshire Spar) is a semi-precious mineral, a form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour. In the UK it is found only at Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire. During the 19th century, it was mined for its ornamental value, and mining continues on a small scale.
This charm is made by the renowned English manufacturer, Thomas L Mott (TLM for short) who made quality souvenir enamel charms for the UK, plus many countries in the old 'Empire', including destinations and stop-overs for cruise liners. These charms date to mid 20th century and are very collectable!
Marks: The charm is hallmarked on the back for Sterling (Silver) and TLM ( the 'T' is partially obscured).
Condition: The charm is in excellent condition, with no enamel missing, and minimal patina. The wording "CASTLETON" is in lovely clear crisp letters .
Dimensions: Charm has a hanging length of just under 1 inch (2.5cm) including the bail & jump ring, and is ~ 5/8 inch (~1.5cm) at its widest. It weighs 1.5 grams.
