This is a beautifully crafted Continental Silver (800-900) Scarab charm that I acquired in France. I removed a small number of these detailed scarabs from an old bracelet, originating from circa 1920s to 1930s. The clear crisp detail of the hieroglyphics is the best I have come across.
Joanne Schwartz's fabulous reference book on charms - Charms and Charm Bracelets - The Complete Guide - devotes pages 62-63 to "The Egyptian Revival", and describes the re-kindled interest in ancient Egyptian themes for jewellery and charms, after the opening of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920s.
Condition: This is a very well made solid silver charm (not hollow) and is in excellent condition, with just some patina - which could be cleaned off, if desired. Marks: This charm is unmarked, but has been tested as between 800-900 silver - usual in France, or Egypt, in this era. Dimensions - 5/8ths inch (1.5 cm) long (without bail & jump ring) by 1/2 inch wide (1.2 cm) Total Weight - 2.2 grams
A beautifully crafted vintage charm for the Collector!
