Vintage 1930s French Faience Carved Scarab Large Charm with Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics - Very Good Condition
This is a large Scarab shaped carved charm that I acquired in France, and removed from an old bracelet, originating from circa 1920s to 1930s. It is made of Egyptian 'faience' a type of ceramic or pottery used in Ancient Egypt, that was still used in the 20th century and used to make Revival souvenir charms such as this. It is solid, not hollow. The scarab outline has been carved into the front, and the rear is decorated with hieroglyphic outlines. It is a pale green colour but would originally have been a much brighter blue-grey colour. It still has its original white metal bail and jump ring.
Joanne Schwartz's fabulous reference book on charms - Charms and Charm Bracelets - The Complete Guide - devotes pages 62-63 to "The Egyptian Revival", and describes the re-kindled interest in ancient Egyptian themes for jewellery and charms, after the opening of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920s.
Condition: This is a larger than usual and well made charm (not hollow) and is in excellent condition. These pre-WW2 faience charms are hard to find these days in such good condition. Marks: Unmarked. Dimensions - Just under 1 inch (2.5 cm) long (including bail & jump ring) by just under 1/2 inch wide (1.2 cm) and ~1/3 inch (1cm) high. Total Weight is 3 grams. A lovely old larger than usual, Ancient Egyptian theme vintage faience charm for the Collector!
