RARE Vintage 800-900 Solid Silver and Faience Scarab Small Charm with detailed Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics - Very Good Condition
I love this little Scarab shaped and decorated charm that I acquired in France, and removed from an old bracelet, originating from circa 1920s to 1930s. It is made from 800-900 Silver, and stamped with Egyptian hallmarks. It is solid, not hollow, and the Scarab's body is decorated on the top with two teeny blue Faience panels. These blue panels are made of Egyptian 'faience' a type of ceramic or pottery used in Ancient Egypt, and still used in the 20th century in these types of Revival souvenir charms. The rear is decorated with tiny beautifully detailed hieroglyphic outline of the Scarab theme.
Joanne Schwartz's fabulous reference book on charms - Charms and Charm Bracelets - The Complete Guide - devotes pages 62-63 to "The Egyptian Revival", and describes the re-kindled interest in ancient Egyptian themes for jewellery and charms, after the opening of King Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920s.
Condition: This is a smaller than usual, very well made and detailed solid silver charm (not hollow) and is in excellent condition, with just some patina - which could be cleaned off, if desired. The faience panels are in good order too, but may have been a brighter colour originally.
Marks: There are what I believe to be Egyptian hallmarks at the bottom end of the scarab (top) and has been confirmed as at least 800-900 silver, usual for vintage Continental silver, pre WW2.
Dimensions: Charm is 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) long (excluding bail & jump ring) by just over 1/4 inch wide (0.7 cm) Total weight is just 1 gram!
A lovely old miniature Ancient Egyptian theme vintage charm, in an unusual combination of silver and faience - great for the Collector!
