This is another one of many pretty butterfly items I have collected over the years. This small oval brooch is in the design of high domed cabochon crystal glass which highlights the morpho butterfly wing background and the painted image of a ship beneath. It is surrounded by twisted Sterling silver edging.

Butterfly wing jewellery items were originally created by the renowned English manufacturer, Thomas L Mott who first exhibited Butterfly Wing jewellery at the 1924 Great Empire Exhibition in London, England, and catapulted the art of reverse painting on Butterfly Wings to a new fashionable craze of fun yet elegant jewellery. This brooch is very much in the style of Thomas Mott but is unsigned.

This brooch would have been a souvenir, purchased on board by a traveller on the Trans Atlantic Crossing voyage between the UK and the USA. I'd estimate it to be 1940s/1950s.

The RMS Queen Elizabeth was an ocean liner operated by Cunard Line. She provided weekly luxury liner service between Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City in the United States, via Cherbourg in France. Launched on 27 September 1938, she was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth, then Queen Consort to King George VI, who became the Queen Mother in 1952. With a design that improved upon that of Queen Mary, RMS Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger ship, the largest passenger liner ever built at that time. She first entered service in February 1940 as a troopship in World War II, and it was not until October 1946 that she served in her intended role as an ocean liner.

Marks: This brooch is set in Sterling Silver. It is clearly marked on the back for 'Sterling Silver' and 'Made in England'. Plus has a 'Patent number' which was granted in 1924. Dimensions: The brooch measures ~1 inch (2.6cm) wide and ~7/8th inch (2.1cm) from top to bottom. It weighs 3.4 grams. Condition: Butterfly wings are in very good vintage condition, and the wings and painting show no damage or deterioration. The rear pin has a slight bend but still shuts securely. Al silver is in very good order. I have a huge collection of hundreds of other sterling charms, including some butterfly wing ones, that I am slowly listing, so please contact me if you are searching for anything in particular.
