Over the 45 years I've collected charms, I've always leapt at the opportunity to buy antique Australian ones, as there's not many of them about! This is a lovely rose gold Tasmanian one - my home state. I would estimate it to be from the later 19th century or early 19th century.
This is a lovely example, in beautifully crafted 9k (9 carat) rose gold. It is a map of the island state of Tasmania, the most southern state in Australia. The map outline is reasonably accurate, and is set in a lifebuoy, perhaps a travel souvenir for coming to Tasmania by boat - the only method in the old days! The lifebuoy has an attractive 'rope' around its outside, just like a real one!
Marks: The rear of the charm has an old '9 CT' mark - a simple hallmark indicating it was made in Australia. It also has a maker's mark of 'T & S'.
Dimensions: The charm has a total hanging length of just under 1 & 1/8ths inch (~3cm) including the bail and jump ring, and a diameter of just under 1 inch (2.4cm). It weighs 3.5 grams.
Condition: The rose gold charm is in good antique condition, with only aged patina and a few tiny scratches from being worn, to the life bouy, but there is one part of the surrounding rope, missing at the bottom. The rose gold has lovely soft aged patina of antique rose gold - I haven't cleaned it. It appears more 'yellow' under the photography lights than it does in natural light. It has a nice solid feel.
Overall, a very interesting example of a unique 'Australiana' gold charm, that would make a great addition to any collection!
