Over the years I've collected a wide variety of vintage and antique charms, and worn them as pendants or on charm bracelets. I've particularly sought out old shamrock or clover charms. This tiny charm is a hanging horseshoe set with a traditional vivid Irish green enamel shamrock, trefoil or 3 leafed clover. (A shamrock is a young sprig, used as a symbol of Ireland. Saint Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, is said to have used it as a metaphor for the Christian Holy Trinity).
I would estimate the age of this charm to be 1920s/1930s. It was made after World War 2 it would be marked 'West Germany'. The enamel is very vivid. The Germans were renowned enamellers, and I have also seen examples of this extra vivid enamel, in men's decorative fobs of the pre-War era.
Marks: The rear of the charm is marked 'Sterling Germany' twice, plus a tiny '925' mark in old fashioned font.
Dimensions: The charm has a total hanging length of just over ~1/2 inch (1.5cm) including the bail and jump ring, and is of just under 1/2 inch (1.1cm) at its widest. It weighs 1.2 grams.
Condition: This sterling silver charm is in excellent condition. It doesn't even have any scratches. The silver has lovely aged patina - I haven't cleaned it. The green enamel is also in excellent order, with no chips or cracks.
Overall, a very fine example of an Irish lucky shamrock charm, and extra pretty with the bright green enamel.
