This is a very attractive Thomas L Mott made Butterfly Wing brooch consisting of a hand painted beautiful tropical island scene, with palm trees and a sailboat, with mountains in the background. The scene is covered in mounded glass and has pretty marcasite leaf highlights on each side. This brooch would have originated in the 1930s, or possibly soon after World War Two. I have not come across any other Thomas L Mott brooches, highlighted with marcasites.
It is made by the renowned English manufacturer, Thomas L Mott (TLM for short) who first exhibited Butterfly Wing jewellery at the 1924 Great Empire Exhibition in London, England, and catapulted the art of reverse painting on Butterfly Wing to a new fashionable craze of fun yet elegant jewellery. Many copies were made but the quality of Thomas L. Mott jewellery has stood the test of time, and is now very collectible.
The brooch is set in Sterling Silver. It is clearly marked on the back for Sterling Silver and TLM (for Thomas L.Mott) and 'England'.
Condition: The brooch is in excellent condition with no damage to any part. The luminous and iridescent Butterfly wing background positively sparkles. All marcasites are present and in good order. The rollover rear clasp works well.
Dimensions: The brooch is 2.25 inches (6cm) wide and 3/4 inch from top to bottom. It weighs 7 grams.
Summary: This is a very attractive TLM Butterfly Wing brooch or pin, with unusual marcasite highlights, and is in excellent vintage condition - all ready to wear!
Please Note: A matching 3 piece set of TLM Butterfly Wing jewellery - consisting of a brooch (pin), a pendant and drop earrings - is also listed separately.
