Some might say that because this beautiful set has a locket in the back that it was intended for a woman in “late” mourning. I have always preferred believing that many of these lockets were used for keeping a sentimental item not necessarily because of a death. This wonderful set has been tested for gold 18k and 14k or in between. Years ago I purchased it as 18k gold and recent testing show that parts are 18k and other parts are a strong 14k. At any rate, this lovely set is circa 1868 – 1876 and is definitely gold.
The stones are garnets or amethysts and I do not know if the white stones are white sapphires or paste. The brooch measures 3 inches from top to bottom of the tassel by 2 1/8 inch wide. In the back is a memory locket and the normal Victorian long pin with the “C” clasp. It also has a ring so that it could matched with a lovely chain and worn as a necklace.
The shepherd hook earrings measure 2.75 inches by .75 inches. This set a show stopper which I can attest to as some years ago I wore it to an event and it was the talk of event. The set together weighs 21 grams.
This outstanding set would make a wonderful addition to your antique jewelry collection. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
