This handsomely framed engraving of La Grosse Herlog, Rouen, France is signed in the plate by H. Toussaint. Toussaint is known for making detailed, unusual views of French cities. This one is alive with people under the huge archway.
The deep green matting with a gild-ruled inner line is surrounded by an elegant gold frame. The framing appears to be from around 1960 or earlier, and is a lovely compliment to the 1880 engraving.
The engraving has a minor spot of foxing in the sky but is otherwise unblemished. The matting and frame show age. All together, this piece has a soft antique look.
