Fine 19th Century watercolors often have a richness in their somber tones and gentle rhythm in their layered brush-strokes of transparent colors. It is unusual to find them in near-perfect condition, without fading or age related deterioration. This example is a rare find. It has all the fore-mentioned characteristics, as well as a perfect visual balance. I believe that it is the work of an accomplished master.
But which master hand made this? It is unsigned and the name of the artist is thus far a mystery. Perhaps that mystery id the perfect accompaniment for the painting's romantic, Tonalist mood.
The painting appears to date from the mid 1800's, and is installed in a newer, mid-20th Century mat and frame. The painting is in excellent condition. The frame shows mild signs of wear.
