J.B. Owens started his own pottery company in 1891. Owens manufactured pottery for only 10 years and won critical acclaim but closed in 1907. The Onyx line was introduced in 1898 and pieces have mottled, striated and variegated designs of light, dark and medium brown, tan, gold, yellow, green, coloring. This line is typically identified by shape number.
Here we have a unique piece of Owens pottery in the Onyx line which stands 6 3/4 inches tall. The striped glaze reminds me of the tiger-eye jewelry. The glaze lays nicely over the large gourd shaped vase. This is a substantial vase that is not easy to knock over.
Wonderful gourd vase in that it has no chips, no cracks, no scratches, no repairs, very minor crazing, a few glaze pops to glaze. Any non-perfections are from the firing/manufacturing process including glaze misses and glaze pops. All pictures are original and un-edited.
