Weller pottery was opened in 1872 by Sam Weller in Fultonham, Ohio. They often used one shape for several lines. The company manufactured hand-decorated pottery in its early years and often were artist signed. Weller produced numerous lines of pottery between 1895 and 1945. The company permanently closed in 1948.
The Jap Birdimal line was designed by Frederick Rhead in 1903. This line was names for its Japanese influence along with a combination of the words bird and animal as they were frequently decorated with geishas, birds and bubble trees. This particular variation features molded and painted tall dark blue trees on a shaded ivory and blue background. This jardinière is uncommon and difficult to find in any condition. This planter is really an exceptional example and a perfect addition to any pottery collection.
