This is a copper plate lithograph by California artist Maurice Walter Kessel. I purchased his works from his family when his niece moved into a retirement community. She was a famous interior designer in the 1980's in New York City. She had inherited her great uncles portfolio upon his death in 1984. Over the past year I have been buying them one at a time and framing them for sale in my store. This piece is one of four. I bought 3 of the 4 with the owner keeping the fourth. According to the niece Maurice Walter Kessel born in New York. He traveled the world painting and taking studies with famous artists of his day. This piece is of an evening sail under a full moon and in view of Cypress trees. I have custom framed it with a black wood frame that has a narrow gold trim. The mat is a rich grey suede with a tiny notched corner gold filet. It has non glare glass and it is ready to hang. The framed piece measures 17" tall by 13 1/2" wide. The actual Image is 10" high by 7 1/2" wide. It is signed in the lower right in pencil M.Kessel. The condition is excellent. What I found most interesting is that as good as he was he had no auction records. Then the family told me he had inherited a great deal of money from his opera singer mother. This allowed him to travel and never need to sell his art. He was in his nineties when he died. The family has many of his glorious oils and watercolors decorating their homes.
