This is an estate purchase from the family of Walter Maurice Kessel. It is a framed watercolor of an Italian lakeside church. Done in soft shades of muted blues, green and beiges. The artist has painted from a hilltop location to another lower level hillside. The painting over looks a lake that is in the background.
Kessel was a life long painter who traveled around the world painting along the way. The family seems to know very little about his life other than he has a large body of work, all privately owned. He sold very few of his paintings and painted for the sheer love of art. I have been able to sell a few of his works in the past.
This watercolor is framed and matted in muted wood frame measuring 22" high by 18" wide. The actual watercolor is 15" high by 11" wide. Since it was hanging in a place of honor in the elegant family home, it is in excellent condition.
It is signed lower left and dated 1929 beneath.
This is one of those very easy to live with paintings.
