Whether you're wearing hand-made beads or precious metals,
proper care of your jewelry will bring you many years of
satisfactory ownership. The following are some brief and easy
-Clean your periodically using water and a non-detergent soap.
Use a soft brush to help remove dirt on larger prongs. Avoid
wearing jewelry while tending to household chores.
-Gold - Did you know that cosmetics, moisture and chemicals can
significantly affect its appearance? Avoid substances
containing chlorine and of course, don't wear in the swimming
-Silver - Special silver jewelry cleaning solutions abound these
days. Avoid extended exposure to air and bright light, as well
as substances containing chlorine.
-Platinum - This is extremely durable and maintains its polished
look very well. You can use the same cleaning methods as for
-Pearls - Always remove traces of cosmetics and wrap properly
before storing. Cultured pearls are vulnerable to damage from
metal and other materials. Avoid wearing a lot of perfume in an
area where you'll be wearing pearls. Hairspray can damage
pearls, as well.
-Diamonds - Ammonia and water work well as do many commercial
jewelry cleaners. Avoid substances containing chlorine.
Store your jewelry so that the pieces do not come in contact
with each other. Wrap individual pieces or put them in separate
compartments in your jewelry box. Jewelry often comes in a
special wrap or box. Keep these to use as they are often the
best means for storing and protecting your jewelry from damage
and dirt. Consult your jeweler for repair of scratches or other
