The Christmas season embodies love and it is very much a time of sentimentality. It is a time of special traditions whilst feelings of joy and benevolence surround the holiday. With the beautiful lights and decorations making everything so festive it’s easy to get caught up in the romanticism of the season.
My family has had a special tradition that commenced when my daughter was a wee tot! On the day following Thanksgiving, bundled up and car packed with hot cocoa and turkey sandwiches; we head to the country to cut down a Christmas tree.
Sometimes there is no snow, while other times, the snow is knee deep and we have to dig out the tree! The trees are never quite perfect but we contemplate if it’s just the right one for us! Sometimes we walk in circles only to come back to the original tree! When agreed, we join hands around the tree and sing “O Christmas tree!”! As the kids have grown, the gathering also has expanded to include a boyfriend or girlfriend.
This year’s expedition was the most extraordinary outing yet! My daughter has been dating a wonderful man who is quite familiar now with our special “family tree date”. The tree farm was truly a winter wonderland and we frolicked in the snow, playfully seeking “our tree”. After the ritual was complete, my daughter’s beau announced he was going to make the day memorable! Her proceeded to pull a ring box from his jacket, got down on one knee and proposed! What an amazing surprise! It was enchanting and touching to have shared in the moment! And, she definitely said YES!
Does your family have special customs or traditions that you hold dear to your hearts? Do you have a favorite ornament? Is there an old Christmas brooch that puts the jolly into Christmas? Perhaps there is an adornment from your childhood or one handcrafted with love by someone special, a treasure that evokes a nostalgic memory. This year when shopping for those on your Christmas list, maybe a vintage ornament or vintage piece of jewelry will stir pleasant memories for someone. I know exactly what my special ornament will be this year to celebrate our big occasion; I’m making a winter vignette with tiny tree and engagement ring charm. It will be a special memento to celebrate!
More often than not when a customer purchases an item in my online shop it is due to sentimentality; stating the item is reminiscent of a loved one. Recently a customer purchased a locket just like her mother had, it was to be Christmas gift for her sister. I love hearing these stories! Those kind of gifts are precious and timeless keepsakes.
At Christmas more so than any other holiday love is at the heart of the season with beloved friends and family being the most priceless treasures of all. Merry Christmas!
