This impressive study uses the artist's talent to the maximum effect, and attention to detail results in a really strong work. The everyday objects offers the opportunity to explore depth and shadow. Still lifes don't have to be made of anything more than simple things you can find nearby. The artist uses apples, wine, grapes, lemon and a brass teapot to work into his still life study. The thick outlines of the objects make them stand out as if they can be touched. Shadows "push" a form back into space and highlights "pull" it forward. When you think of it like this, painting is a lot like sculpting and it helps the artist when he thinks of the shading as creating three dimensional shape.
W. F. Stidworthy was born in Devon, England in 1889. He took advanced art training at the Torquay School of Art and the Polytecnic School in Chelsea. He also studied under William Beatty, Ralph McMillan, Franz Johnson and Carl Schaefer. Stidworthy held a number of man made shows and had his works exhibited in major Canadian cities and has his paintings in many private collections.
The painting measures 28" by 24" framed in a painted wooden frame and 24 1/2" by 21" unframed.
